Why human energy matters: Why internal events and connection are the heart of company culture
For the eagle-eyed of you, you may have noticed a shift in Bright's look, alongside a slight focus in our messaging to highlight our event specialism of creating internal employee engagement events that get teams energised and connected.
According to Gallup, employee engagement in the UK is at an all-time low, with only 10% of employees being actively engaged with their job and, on estimate, costs the world economy roughly $10 trillion in lost productivity. Most organisations already know engagement is a problem, but fewer have a clear answer for what actually shifts it. For us at Bright, that’s internal events. We believe they are the most direct and underused tools for creating a true sense of belonging, one of the core drivers of employee engagement.
Internal events create a sense of community through shared experiences.
When employees have a strong workplace community, they are eight times more likely to feel like they belong, which leads to:
43% increased retention
84% estimated tenure
41% improved eNPS
20% better work
40% more satisfaction with the employee experience
40% more job satisfaction
38% reduced burnout

Community isn't something that builds itself. It's built in the moments people spend together outside of their day-to-day tasks, which is exactly what a well-run internal event creates: a shared experience that gives a team something in common beyond the work itself.
How do internal events help build a sense of belonging?
It gets everyone in the same room, in a world where that’s becoming less frequent.
Remote and flexible working has brought real benefits, but often at the cost of a unified culture. CIPD's Good Work Index 2026 found that 10% of employees working fully from home say they don't have any relationship with their colleagues at all, compared with just 3% of those not working from home. Fewer shared physical spaces means fewer chances to build the relationships that culture depends on. Internal events put that back on the calendar deliberately, rather than leaving it to chance.
They show that you’re investing in your team.
Training and development programmes, all-company conferences, even socials, all send a signal that you're putting time, money and energy into your people. LinkedIn Learning's research found that 94% of employees say they'd stay at a company longer if it invested in their career development, so events built around learning or recognition do more than deliver their stated content. They're also a chance to reinforce the overall mission of your company, which, once someone has been with you a while, can easily get lost in the day-to-day. Feeling connected to a company's purpose doesn't happen automatically, and it’s these moments that bring it back into focus.
They spark spontaneous moments of connection.
Company culture is created in the moments you can't predict- the conversation that happens between sessions rather than the session itself. With remote and flexible teams, the "watercooler" effect has had to find a new home, and internal events are increasingly it. We build space for those small, spontaneous occasions into the events we produce, because they're often what people remember and what actually builds community within a team.
What this means for internal events
None of this means every internal event automatically builds belonging. A conference with no downtime, a social with no structure, or a town hall that's purely one-way communication can miss the mark just as easily as doing nothing at all. The events that work are the ones designed with connection as an explicit goal, not an assumed byproduct.
That's the thinking behind our shift in focus. We're not just producing events; we're producing the shared experiences, signals of investment, and unplanned moments that build the belonging your engagement strategy actually depends on.
